Staff from Jessops Construction visited the Early Years Unit at Bishop Alexander LEAD Academy on Thursday.
The visit was part of their 'Name the Mascot' competition which invited primary schools in Newark to assist them in naming the Jessops' new mascot. The competition ran from 3rd July through to the end of the academic term on 25th July 2017.
Following the closing date, Managing Director Richard Wherry together with other staff members, went through the entries and undertook the task of selecting the winner.
He said "We would like to thank everyone who took part in this campaign. Choosing the name was difficult, our mascot will play an important role in engaging the local communities in which we are working so it needed to be right. The winning entry stood out as being the most likeable whilst also encompassing what we do."
The winning entry was submitted by pupils from Bishop Alexander LEAD Academy and the new mascot was given the name of Billy Buildit which was announced on the company's social media platforms.
The school received a set of role play foam house building bricks and a visit from Jessops' staff including the newly named Jessops Construction mascot.
Michelle Thomas of Jessops said of the visit "Billy and I had a lovely time visiting with the children today. It was great to see their enthusiasm and energy, we talked about building things and how to be safe. Hopefully we have inspired a few future careers in construction"
Leon Charlesworth, teacher at the academy added "We were delighted to have won the competition and the role play bricks will provide an invaluable resource for our school. The visit from Billy was also very helpful, we actively encourage the children to risk assess as part of their learning, and we were able to build that into our conversation with Billy on safety."
Billy Buildit will now travel across the country visiting local communities in which the company is constructing.
