Works commence at Chard

Works have commenced on the new Lidl food store on Tapstone road in Chard, Somerset.
Nottinghamshire based contractor and retail specialist construction firm, Jessops Construction started works in the latter stages of 2018.
The early works involved the stripping out, demolition of existing buildings and site clearance.  These works, together with the removal of surplus materials will continue until March 2019, when the foundations for the new store are due to commence.
Richard Sherry, Commercial Manager at Jessops Construction said: "We are thrilled to be working on the new Lidl store in Chard. Our firm has built up a strong retail portfolio having worked with a number of major national retailers, this however will be our first for Lidl."
The food store will be the larger of Lidl's standard specification stores and have a gross internal area of 2,125sqm of which 1,325sqm will be dedicated to sales. The site will also have a 114 space car-park which includes dedicated disabled and family parking together with soft landscaping to complement the store.
The site, formerly owned by electrification traction specialist firm Brecknell Wills, has been in operation since 1938 however with the construction of a new, purpose built factory, it became surplus to requirements and was sold.
In keeping with their community focussed company values, Jessops Construction have been working with various community groups on the project.
The firm, together with their client and owner of the site Quora Ltd, have donated a prominent church bell and tower, removed from the site in November, to the Chard Museum and Heritage Centre. The Site Management team are also assisting in the production of the exhibit and preserving the town's history by providing photographs and minor materials.
Jessops Construction community liaison team have also been working with a number of local schools on a mental health themed artwork project which will adorn the site perimeter fencing or 'hoarding' until the fencing is removed as construction nears completion.
The scheme will run for approximately 40 weeks and handed over to Lidl internal fit-out teams at the end of July 2019.
