The existing site comprised of a former Police station located between Burton and Tunstall Road in the heart of a residential area. The existing building was a three storey brick built structure with a pitch roof occupying approximately a third of the triangular shaped site.
The works included the demolishing of the existing three storey brick building and construction of two retail units. An Aldi Foodstore unit (19,000 sq ft) and a Fultons unit (3.000 sq ft). Both units are steel framed buildings and are cladded with composite panels / shopfront glazing. In addition to this the Aldi unit has a large section of James & Taylor rainscreen cladding. External works included the provision of 105 car parking spaces both in tarmacadam and block paving.
This site was not without its challenges, there were many underground services that needed diverting, structures that required piling, an artesian well and a large amount of imported stone to make up levels. Even with all these challenges this scheme sits well within the site and its surroundings and compliments the existing retail offer in Holbeck.
