Jessops Proud to Have Been a Part of Lincolnshire’s New Landmark!
It’s been a long time coming, but at last, the 29-metre-high monument honouring the Bomber Command crews has been erected at Norton Disney.
The project began in 2018, and we were proud to have been involved from the very start. From overseeing the digging and pouring of the concrete foundations, through managing the erection of the podium frame, to the installation of the steel sculpture on the podium.
The sculpture has been carefully designed so that wind travels through it, creating a sense of movement from every angle. Its design is based on the Lancaster that tragically crashed in the early hours of 19 September 1942 while returning to RAF Swinderby. Two of the engines are encircled in steel to represent them run them running, while the other two are left open, a poignant detail symbolising how they stalled, leading to the fatal crash.
It has been an incredibly challenging journey for the trust to raise the necessary funds, but the steel sculpture now stands proudly as the ‘Gateway to Lincolnshire’ – a striking presence on the hillside, clearly visible to thousands passing daily along the A46.
We would also like to acknowledge the valuable contribution of Hutchinsons Engineering Services Ltd and Timmins Eng & Construction Ltd, whose expertise played a key role in bringing this project to fruition.
